Are there opportunities to promote my
company/organization and support the professional development of the
APPL community? There are a variety of
sponsorship opportunities available that
will allow you to gain exposure with the more than 600 expected
attendees, presenters, and exhibitors. Convention sponsorships help
you maximize the impact of your organization’s participation by
associating your name with events, educational programming, keynote
speakers, and convention amenities.
In addition, both a silent and live auction are held during the
convention to raise support for the APPL Education and Scholarship
Fund, which provides scholarships to APPL members to attend the
annual convention and professional development trainings throughout
the year. Your donation to the auctions not only promotes your
organization/company but it also demonstrates your support of the
work the APPL community does to engage and educate the public about
America’s treasured places and spaces.
Are meals included?
Some meals are included but not all. See “What’s included in the
registration fee” to find out which meals will be included with

Should I bring my board members?
Yes, the APPL Convention is an excellent opportunity for board
members to network with other board members, attend sessions geared
towards governance, fundraising, and partnership topics, and they
can learn more about product offerings at the Trade Show. While
board members may attend any sessions they want we will post a
suggested list of sessions geared directly to board members once the
convention program is finalized.
How can I make the most of my experience
as a first time attendee? First time attendees should plan to attend the
Newcomers Orientation on Sunday, March 1 and learn how to take
advantage of the unique networking and professional development
opportunities available to you during the convention. You’ll meet
other first time attendees and be introduced to the APPL board and
staff. Plan you convention week prior to arriving in Baltimore.
Review the schedule of sessions and events and map out your
itinerary. Make sure to check out the companies exhibiting at
the Trade Show and make a list of vendors you want to visit and
their booth numbers. Already know you want to place an order, then
come prepared with your purchase orders to distribute at the show.
And don’t forget to pack comfortable shoes (no need to worry about
fashion police attending the convention, comfort comes first) and
lots of business cards to hand out to new contacts and exhibitors.

What can I do before or after the convention to maximize my
investment of time and resources?
What is unique about
the APPL convention that I won’t find elsewhere? The APPL convention focuses on building and enhancing
partnerships in the public lands community. Participants can learn
from and network with others who share a commitment to
engaging the public with their natural and cultural heritage.
Nonprofit concepts such as board responsibilities, fundraising, and
volunteerism are delivered within the context of these special
partnerships and mission. Effective concepts in interpretive product
development, interpretive sales, and educational programming are
offered to improve earned income and educational programming among
partners. Exhibitors at the Trade Show bring products unique to the
public lands community, backed with an understanding of how their
products complement the goals of the agencies and their nonprofit
partners.
Do I have to
preregister for the education sessions?
All General
Sessions and concurrent educational sessions are included with
attendee registration. Registration for the concurrent educational
session offerings in not required. However, some sessions fill up
quickly so we recommend arriving early to sessions to ensure you
have a seat. Exhibitors may purchase a $75 ticket per session they
want to attend (tickets will be available onsite only at the
registration desk).
Registration is required and additional fees apply, however, for the Optional Full Day Trainings on
Sunday, March 1 and
Thursday, March 5.
Please see the Registration materials for complete details.

How can I
maximize my
investment of time and resources? Before the convention, review the educational offerings and
special events in the registration materials, and make a draft list
of what you’d like to attend. If you are participating in the
convention as part of a team, plan on having each team member
participate in different sessions, so you can compare notes later.
Visit the APPL Web site and look at the Trade Show specials. Come
prepared with draft orders and questions for the vendors. And, when
you pack, be sure to bring lots of business cards to exchange with
other participants and vendors.
After the convention, type up any notes or new ideas gained and
share them with others back home. Make a list of just three new
things you’d like to implement in the coming year that you learned
or were inspired to do as a result of your convention experience,
and put them on your planning calendar. Follow up with individuals
you met. A simple e-mail can remind new acquaintances that you
enjoyed meeting them, learned from the experience, and are willing
to share resources and information in the future. And check out
APPL’s Newswire and Web site for follow-up information from the
convention.
Will any of the sessions be offered online or at other conferences?
APPL does not record any of the presentations for online
delivery following the convention. You may ask presenters to forward
you their presentations after the convention, but some may decline
because of content ownership.
Can I volunteer and receive a discount?
Volunteering at the convention is a wonderful way to support APPL while meeting new people and working with friends from other
organizations. Volunteers are needed to help with bag stuffing,
registration, greeting convention attendees, collecting tickets, and
assisting with the auctions. Check the volunteer opportunities you are interested in on your registration form and you will receive
additional information by e-mail in February about signing up for
specific time slots during the convention. APPL Members applying for
scholarships are encouraged to volunteer to assist with special
events that do not conflict with their opportunity to participate in
educational sessions and networking in exchange for
financial support to attend the convention.
Discounts are not generally provided to volunteers.
