The Doubletree Hotel Lloyd Center is full! If you have not made
hotel reservations yet and are looking for a place to stay we have
reserved another block of rooms at the Courtyard by Marriott
Portland Lloyd Center and highly recommend this hotel if you’d like
to be close to convention activities. To make your reservations
contact the hotel directly and make sure to mention the APPL group
code “APPAPPA.”

Have you ever wondered why APPL encourages you to stay in our
"host hotels" for the convention and trade show? Here are some
reasons why APPL really needs you to book within the room blocks:
- We work hard to
find good hotels, in good locations at decent prices for our
members. It is easier for us to negotiate better room
rates for you when APPL can prove that we will fill a larger number
of rooms.
- The price APPL pays
for meeting space is based upon the number of sleeping rooms we say
we can fill. Although there were more than 700 people in
Albuquerque for our convention, we could only account for 350
sleeping rooms. Since this is lower than the required 500 rooms to
earn free meeting space, APPL had to pay a substantial (and
unnecessary) bill of $10,000.
- When APPL falls
short of our room block we pay for unused sleeping rooms (attrition
cost). Luckily in Albuquerque, the Doubletree Hotel did not
enforce attrition penalties. We avoided attrition penalties at the
Hyatt by only 2%.
- The cities where we
book our subsequent conventions look at our past history to judge
what to offer us. Our bargaining power is severely diminished
when we cannot account for APPL's total impact in our host city.
- Our Trade Show, one
of the best in the industry, is large for our number of attendees.
We cannot reserve adequate Trade Show space if we do not have the
room nights to balance the request.
Transportation
Travel to Portland is easy by car, air or rail. The Portland
International Airport is served by many major airlines and is only a
35 minute ride on Portland’s MAX light rail system to the Doubletree
Hotel Lloyd Center. You can buy your ticket for less than $2 and
board at the end of the baggage claim area! More airport information
can be found at
www.portlandairportpdx.com. Amtrak
also serves Portland via their Northwest network (www.amtrak.com
or 1-800-USA-RAIL).
