Job Description
The Seasonal Tour Guide leads groups of visitors on guided tours of Glen Canyon Dam and participates with general interpretation inside and outside of the Carl Hayden Visitor Center.

Qualifications
Applicants should be knowledgeable of Glen Canyon Dam, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, and the Colorado Plateau, able to work unsupervised, enthusiastic and proactive in communicating with visitors, possess excellent oratory skills, and be able to pass a security background check. Foreign language skills are a plus.

Season
The season begins in March 2005 and can extend through November 2005. Scheduled hours are 30 to 40 per week.

GS4/1 ($11.43 per hour)

Seasonal Information Specialist III at Navajo Bridge Interpretive Center/Lees Ferry Sub-district

Job Description
The Seasonal Information Specialist III provides on-site management, supervises 2 to 3 employees, places stock orders, reconciles daily receipts, makes sales of books and other educational materials, stocks shelves, participates with general interpretation inside and outside of the visitor center, works with the NPS Sub-district interpreter to achieve the interpretive goals of the site, and provides information to visitors at Navajo Bridge/Lees Ferry, Arizona.

Site Description

Navajo Bridge, in Northern Arizona, is located near the Hwy 89/89A interchange, the route from the South Rim to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, on the boundary between Glen Canyon NRA, Grand Canyon NP, and Navajo Tribal Lands. Historic Navajo Bridge was built over Marble Canyon in 1928. Lees Ferry, located a few miles away within Glen Canyon NRA, is the only location for hundreds of miles in which the Colorado River may be accessed by automobile. Lees Ferry is an important historic district and provided the only means to cross the Colorado River in this area for more than 50 years. Today, Lees Ferry is the put-in for rafting trips through Grand Canyon and the terminus for Paria Canyon hikes.

Qualifications

Applicants should be knowledgeable of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Lake Powell, and the Colorado Plateau, able to work unsupervised, enthusiastic and proactive in communicating with visitors, and possess supervisory and sales experience. Foreign language skills are a plus.

Season

The season begins in April, 2005 and ends in October, 2005. Scheduled hours are 30 to 40 per week. Housing is available at Lees Ferry; living on-site is mandatory.

Seminar Program Manager
Yellowstone Association

Summary Description:
The Yellowstone Association Institute is a nonprofit field school operated in partnership with the National Park Service.  We offer a variety of educational programs on the natural and cultural history of Yellowstone.  This year we will provide nearly 100,000 contact hours of education to more than 3,500 park visitors (adults and families).  Courses are based at our Lamar Buffalo Ranch field campus, at historic park hotels, and in the backcountry.  For a complete description of the Institute program, please visit us at www.YellowstoneAssociation.org.  

The Program Manager is directly responsible for management of our cornerstone program, the Field Seminars.  He or she will work closely with college professors, researchers, park staff, and other experts to develop and promote high quality educational programs that reflect the broad interpretive themes of Yellowstone National Park.  Success in this position requires good business sense, a strong commitment to educational quality, and close attention to deadlines and details.  The Seminar Program Manager will be based at our North Entrance Education Center in Gardiner, Montana.  This is a key management position with growth potential in one of the country’s premiere national park field schools. 

Primary Responsibilities:
·        Develop and manage a broad selection of adult seminars based on interpretive and budget goals.  Develop course schedule, recruit contract instructors, write course descriptions, promote courses, and monitor program quality.
·       
Serve as primary contact for approximately 80 contract instructors.  Maintain strong positive relationships through regular communication and support.
·       
Develop and manage a detailed course budget including projected enrollment, revenues, and expenses.
·       
Work with National Park Service and United States Forest Service to ensure that all Institute programs obtain necessary permits and comply with land agency guidelines and requirements.  Submit applications and reports as requested.
·       
Recruit, train, supervise, and demonstrate our appreciation for the talented volunteers who support the seminar program.
·       
Supervise a seasonal employee who manages summer operations at our Lamar Buffalo Ranch field campus.
·       
Assist Director of Educational Operations with implementation of annual marketing plan for all Institute programs.  Write press releases, host writers, represent Institute to the media.
·       
Represent the Institute and its mission to diverse audiences.
·       
Serve on an integrated management team to address issues such as wilderness risk management, marketing, and program quality.

Qualifications:

The ideal applicant will be a team player with an advanced degree and at least five years of relevant employment in Interpretation, Environmental Education, Outdoor Education, or a closely related field.  Previous experience in program development and marketing is required.  A close knowledge of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and experience working with volunteers are preferred.  All applicants must have excellent oral and written communication skills, strong organizational ability, and a demonstrated commitment to the educational mission of the Yellowstone Association.

Compensation:
Annual salary of $28,000 to $34,000 based on experience.  Starting benefits include two weeks paid vacation, ten paid holidays, retirement program, and flexible benefit plan.  Modest housing is available for rent from the Yellowstone Association in Gardiner, Montana.

The Sequoia Natural History Association is the cooperating association for Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. We have an exciting job opportunity for an experienced cave naturalist managing Crystal Cave tour and education programs in Sequoia.
 

SEASON:
Summer seasonal, Early-April to early November.


PRIMARY DUTIES:

Train and supervise staff of 10 cave naturalists.

Director of Development
Yellowstone Association

Due to tremendous recent growth, the Yellowstone Association is facing a severe shortage of employee housing, office and warehouse space, and educational facility space. When those challenges are addressed, the Association will be able to take advantage of upcoming opportunities which will allow the Association to dramatically increase its support for Yellowstone National Park. To meet these needs, a long-range infrastructure plan and a detailed capital campaign plan have been developed with the support of the National Park Service and with advice of professional fund raising counsel. The Association’s proposed $10 million capital campaign is now in the final approval process by the National Park Service. In preparation for the campaign, the Association has actively begun donor development through a series of successful Legacy for Learning events held in Yellowstone over the past two years. The Association’s board is actively engaged in the capital campaign effort.

Principal duties include:

Developing and implementing effective and creative long and short-term plans for all Association development efforts.

Membership:

Developing and administering a highly effective and efficient membership recruitment and development program. Improving membership retention and increasing average membership gifts (including expansion of the Yellowstone Society) will be critical in reaching Association goals. The Association will be revising its goals for membership during fiscal 2005 as part of a long-range strategic planning process; the expectation is that goals for all development efforts will be aggressive but achievable.

Writing, developing, and producing effective development materials including, but not limited to, membership/donor recruitment letters, acknowledgement letters, articles for membership newsletter, website materials. Preparing or overseeing the preparation of quarterly membership newsletters.

Establishing good working relationships with all Association employees and providing all employees with creative and effective membership recruiting tools; training employees in membership recruitment and fostering employee motivation to recruit and retain members.

Directing all aspects of membership fulfillment in an effective and efficient manner.

Maintaining accurate computerized member/donor records; further developing the existing database to enable the Association to accurately evaluate and track member/donor sources, average gifts, and retention rates; producing accurate and timely monthly membership and fund raising statistical reports.


Capital campaign:

Directing the Association’s upcoming $10 million capital campaign, utilizing professional fund raising counsel. Instituting and managing effective campaign planning and donor tracking, conducting donor research, developing and handling written correspondence with donors, participating in personal contacts with donors when appropriate, planning and executing meaningful donor visits and special events, meeting with board committees, and other duties as determined during campaign planning.

Establishing excellent relationships with donors and volunteers at all levels, particularly with major donors and major donor prospects.

Serving as principal staff to campaign Steering Committee and subcommittees; fostering team atmosphere to build committee strength.


General:

Providing accurate, professional, effective and timely acknowledgements for all gifts received by the Association.

Hiring and supervising membership and capital campaign support staff, as needed. Currently, support staff consists of one full-time Associate Director of Development with primary responsibility for Yellowstone Society development and special events, a Membership Coordinator who handles the clerical aspects of the membership program, and seasonal help, as needed. (It is recognized that additional clerical help may be required for the capital campaign.)

Preparing a detailed, accurate and complete annual budget for all functions supervised which supports an effective annual work plan designed to meet long-range goals. Monitoring expenditures during year against budget and reporting on results against budget on a quarterly basis or as needed.

Advising Executive Director and performing other duties as requested.
 

The ideal candidate would have the following qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree (minimum) with progressively responsible experience as a membership/development professional.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Solid supervisory skills; ability to help staff maximize their potential for personal and professional growth while achieving the goals of the organization.
Deadline-oriented; goal-oriented. Team player willing roll up sleeves and help with all levels of work to get the job done and willing to support all areas of the Association’s activities.

Demonstrated prior success in a professional development program. Demonstrated ability to direct rapid but cost-efficient expansion of a membership program and/or experience in capital campaign management a distinct plus.

Dedication to maintaining high standards for quality and professionalism for all member/donor interactions and mailings. Ability to represent the Association in a professional, enthusiastic, and effective manner.

Willingness to travel throughout the park and surrounding areas using personal vehicle (expenses reimbursed) to promote and manage membership recruitment and development; willingness to travel in connection with a capital campaign.

Ability to manage computer database program effectively.

Flexibility, creativity, and vision to adapt and develop member/donor recruitment and retention programs within National Park Service guidelines.

In addition, applicants must enjoy working in a busy but fun office environment, must be flexible and willing to work with other staff members whenever necessary to accomplish the overall goals of the Association.


Salary:

Starting salary range for this position is $62,000 - $72,000. Actual starting salary will depend upon qualifications and experience.

The Association office is located at Mammoth Hot Springs, Wyoming, which is the administrative headquarters for Yellowstone National Park. Mammoth Hot Springs is inside the park, five miles south of the park’s northern entrance near Gardiner, Montana. As park roads are closed during the winter to automobile traffic, Association employees generally live in Gardiner or north of Gardiner within commuting distance. Gardiner has a population of approximately 600. The nearest small town is Livingston, Montana, (population of around 7,000) located approximately 57 miles north of the office. Bozeman, Montana, home of Montana State University, is located approximately 80 miles northwest of the office and provides numerous cultural and recreational opportunities.

The area is known for its incredible scenic beauty and abundant wildlife. Opportunities for outdoor recreation in Yellowstone National Park and adjoining public lands are virtually unlimited.
